In 2024, the company announced plans to invest US$1.5bn over the next decade to enhance digital transformation and improve efficiencies in data centre migration.
As the data centre market grows in response to increasing AI and cloud computing demands, business leaders like Vodafone must keep up with innovation and the need for scalable data infrastructure.
Data centres are at a pivotal point, considering the AI/sustainability paradox. Paul Greenley, Vodafone’s Senior Principal Manager DC Infrastructure & Facilities, who has been with the company for 12 years, has played a significant role in implementing changes within its data centres.
“We have large data centres located in Ireland, Italy, Germany, and the UK,” Paul explains. “Surrounding these main data centres, we operate what we refer to as satellite data centres. These smaller facilities comply with group standards but are managed by local markets.”
He adds: “Our transformation has been propelled by on-premises solutions for various Vodafone programmes. My responsibility is to ensure we can meet these demands, manage cooling effectively, and avoid the need for external construction.”
