The author emphasizes the importance of asking, “Who do we want to be?” as a critical challenge in shaping a responsible future.
Is the goal to become the most effective producers of work products, in whatever form that may take? As humans, are we here to contribute to the economy, or are we striving to accomplish our tasks more efficiently so we can enhance our overall productivity in life?
The answers to these questions will vary from one organization to another, and from leader to leader.
What is the biggest challenge you face in your role?
My greatest challenge is a cultural one.
There exists a tension between personal freedom and societal membership. No one enjoys being told “no,” yet the risks associated with AI necessitate the establishment of guardrails.
Engaging in productive conversations requires navigating that tension and embracing it.
However, discussions often become overly simplistic. We need to explore the trade-offs associated with the widespread use of AI.
If we embrace the benefits of increased productivity, research advancements, medical breakthroughs, new conveniences, and other advantages, we must also address the job displacements, energy consumption, malicious uses, and other associated risks.
Additionally, the societal and structural issues of the past continue to affect our data and systems.
As we move towards a more automated society, we risk embedding the challenges of the past and present into the digital society of the future.
Encouraging people to ask, “Who do we want to be?” is my most significant challenge.
